artist sketchbook influnce

One of my main issues with my work was a lack of evidence as to where my ideas had came from and what my ideas was. one m,aion outlet that never helped me get across my views was infact my slkecthbook so in a attempt to iun do this I looked (simpley enough) was ideas of how to set out a better sketch book while also getting more ideas on how to put across my own.Typing in illustration and fine art sketchbook formats and ideas brought up many different and interstying ideqas one in particular was RACHELLOU who was artist whom like myself dabbled in different formats and idewas while using different matireals Below is a link to her main workl outlet that I feel I will be using more often when I am stuck for ideas:

Below are some of the images of what I would use:

brief (edited in progress)

Rebecca Lister
Scars
Illustration

Project proposal

Section 1:
Even before starting my past projects I had already knew my chosen mediums were illustration and painting due to my love of artists, Like Dante Gabriel Rossetti, which I had researched before hand. Progress on part 1 and 2 of my course revealed that, while my actual illustration style had improved, the content and reasoning for my work had not. Trying to present my image or final piece in an appropriate manor was a weak point, which I needed to improve on. One project that helped increase my knowledge of my chosen medium was the ‘My Manifesto’ as it enabled me to get my points and views across. In future projects I want to carry on these views and also the amount of artist’s research and the artists I found on my journal. Throughout all my past projects I had experimented with mediums such as paint, ink, chalk that I would have never considered in the past. These mediums help me while considering what to use and experiment with and are mediums I would like to use in the future.

Section 2:

The actual concept of my project proposal is Scars, looking at connecting the idea of scars and people together. I aim to look at the different types of scars we receive as a human being and how they are inflicted. Also considering my own personal experiences with scars and the effects they have on me  .As well as looking deeply into the emotional side and trying to make my work evoke feeling whether that is hate, distain, disgust, this is something I will be developing as the project develops. To accompany this I will be looking at artist who works similar to me perhaps on a similar medium as well as ones I can take methods and processes from that I have never previously used like, for example, Matisse who has been a big help in my work so far. Alongside using artists as help I hope to improve my own work.

Section 3:
Throughout the FMP I will be noting down and evaluating ideas that worked and pieces that didn't as I go on as well as tecniques I have used as far. All these will be evaluated on my blogger. While I continue to develop my work i will be taking into consideration how I plan to present my final outcome or review it on a bigger scale. Presenting my work in a exhibit at the end of the year is crucial and receving feedback from classmates via group critic wi8ll be noted down and acted upon.

References and artist to use
For one of my ideas i decided to look at one magazine which would be perfect for my researching and a great way to tie in the rest of my work. That was The Private Eye magazine a political and satire magazine. One image i did find was the one shown below which caught my eye mainly became of its use of colours simple images (nothing to complex that couldn't be done) but was the way it had been set out, just a blank background which made the image pop.
I will be taking this into my work and look more into it.

Ink medium drawing,http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-The Private Eye,Roystom,(2017),nnbHMw5GK1s/VHiB1122GgI/AAAAAAAAFPw/ahxGX7ayBWA/s1600/royston_paddington_film_cartoon.jpg,found friday 30th 2017,

Another one that really did catch my attention and in some aspects relate to what i was doing was this image:

Nick Newman

Both funny and the type of thing i would draw (breasts be honest ).something i want to look into maybe even merge it with one of my ideas (looking at making me naked and drawing me as such, in shame to represent how o feel or felt towards a certain subject (alone and afraid).
I then took the chance to look more into some of the artist who drew for the paper (as there were more then one that would frequent them).Below are more images found that will be used as reference from the artist above:

refr=eral (evaluation)

Overview
(Review of my work)
As of yesterday i found out i had a referral for my work as it was not up to the standard of which it should be to get a pass(which now i have a referral is all i can get).My main goal in the two weeks i have been given is to bring my project together and plug the gap which brought my grades down, Feedback i was given from my tutors was accurate(maybe why it hurt a little too much ) but was something i could achieve in the time i was given . Suggestions that i was given was a s such
My work had a massive leap(which had been effected when i had been given feedback from my tutor which geared me off into a enjoyable but some what fast passed and unexplained direction).
The actual work i had done was okay to look at (had nice styles)but really had no purpose when it came to the way i presented it.AS in it would have been better in a magazine or some type of political or satirical magazine with a type of caption to accompany it
My sketch book didn't show the full extent of how i had switched(my sketchbook was okay but lacked what the tutors looked for but i feel this was a subjective quote as a sketch book cant be wrong it can only be for yourself and for those who don't understand it theres no real answer for it.
Though i may still be a little bit bitter about my work not receiving what i would of wanted praise wise but this is life i suppose.

(Next day research)
Later on i spoke with my tutor again and things were cleared up and i could grasp what i needed to do.And what i could look at.As a mentioned that i had considered putting my work into a style such as private eye (and that i had looked at it ) this gave me the idea to do something or take inspiration from their type of work. This could be drawings or pen work(even paint work) in which there would be a subject and then a little quote underneath giving a hint or giving the looker a clue as to what was going on.
My tutor spoke to me about one drawing that he felt was not only the strongest but the most me out of all my portfolio this was a image that i had quickly sketched out without thought as a practice image. i was going to base my future (or more completion work on this )maybe bringing back my life drawing (which i could include in my folder) as part of my development (drawing out a few quick sketches and including them in my sketchbook
The last piece of feed back i got which really set me off was that i should make my work about me and maybe turn my audience(which was the main and most curtail reason for my low grades)
turning my audience to myself as a women (but not making it all to feminist making it about myself)
A example i automatically thought of was D.Trump and his grab her by the pussy situation the way that he shaped the men around him to be horrible to women and start to treat them the way he does.
Maybe have a image of me reacting to it or maybe my face in horror as i see trump using my own images.

What i need to do next:
My next thoughts over the next two weeks is to pull my work together (work on another sketch book which simply illustrates my ideas(exploring past mediums in said book) trying some of these ideas on paper and filling my portfolio out further (adding some bits).
Start on and make images even if they are in just inks for final pieces though i would prefer paint so i could still stick with my FMP
Edit my project proposal and print out so that it will be more open to my ideas.
look at the private eye magazines and my research as well as viz and look at the political side and maybe even use the FAT SLAGs from VIZ as some type of inspiration (could do a large amount of detailed sketches which leads up to my final outcome.
And most importantly clean up and paperwork thats important
as well as soon taking down my work.

Resources i should add to my list and use in the future:
VIZ
Playboy images and sketches in cartoon section
Punch magazine (something which is 99% images )

Artist influence:
After the review of my earlier work I decided to expand my knowledge with medium,I wanted to look particularly at my tutor
Link to daves online Art profile(outdated but still relevant):

Unfortunately this was all I could find on line when attempting to look for his work,Below are some of his art pieces that were for sale,

Asking the artist:

Artist Pablo picasso

To continue with my new idea i wanted to look at artist whom would work well alongside it.Looking into (as suggested by my tutor) Degenerate art. i looked at one artist whom i was familiar with and also felt would work the best. This was:
Pablo Picasso:
Known for his crazy, colourful and distorted faces Pablo was never known for portraying normality.
i wanted to combine some of Pablo's style while working on my own.Looking to experiment with distorting faces and taking the worst out of some one and projecting this on them.

Below are some some of his well known (and relevent pieces) that i would like to use in this FMP:

A new idea direction with my work

After receiving feed back from a tutor it was highly suggested that i take my current idea in a new dircetion(to help up my current level). While at first i felt a little put down with the thought of my ideas not working so well i soon realised how helpful it would be.This feed back was given as my old idea did not have as much weight and would apparently be a little too depressing for people(though i feel some work in the Tate could be perceived as the same but this is yet to be SAID OTHERWISE)
To break down the feedback was given:
Instead of scars look at the ugliness of people (what we have inside of us)Turing my attention to celebrities (people whom will be most know for their ugly ways, mean words, and arguments that would add up to nothing)
It was suggested (and i have already started) to look at articles and find quails that celebrity's had said to each other. One women who automatically came to mind when the mention of mean people came up was
Katie Hopkins:

Known for her excerpts and bad mouthing specially of the fat shamming and common side of life in magazines and controversial TV experiences she was the perfect start to my project.Hated by most and apparently (after researching her) loved by another man namely Trump:

Donald Trump

I felt it was best to start off with the news on trump at this very moment.as seen above Trump is well known for expressing op ions and carrying out on the worst ones. Especially against immigrants and any one whom doesn't share his nationality(mainly the immigrants Mexico).

some famous quotes by the one and only:
All of the women on The Apprentice flirted with me - consciously or unconsciously. That's to be expected.
What separates the winners from the losers is how a person reacts to each new twist of fate.
Sometimes your best investments are the ones you don't make.

As my work contiunes i will making more and more additions but for now i want to stick to only a few (mainly due to the time peroid i have to complete said tasks in) i will most likely be looking

Exhibtion ideas and concepts

Ashely peifer exhition

Side note:
Even though my ideas have changed drastically i still feel that i can pull these ideas off so i am still keeping in mind.Maybe steering away for a interactive one.

Above are some of the ideas I had looked into while contemplating my exhibition and how I would lay it out though these are all beginning thoughts.prehapns adding bunting or some other type of decoration to my final piece es and the layout.
I do how ever want to make my final piece well displayed and well layer out for all to see

As my final piece (or more particularly pieces are in a set of 8 I want to line them up perfectly from the ones I hate the most (that being people ) to the best ones )

Statement from artist Andrea Lofke

Artist Statement
………..once upon a time there was a world: whimsical, humorous, credulous, synthetic, intimate, alien, glittering, soft, innocent and childlike, humming and obscure……….
Materials, found, everyday objects and colorful, decorative supplies overflow the categorized shelves and bins in my studio. In fabricating these fairy-like worlds, I knit, cut, glue, sew, find, draw, construct, select, saw, paint, decorate, carve, combine and mold. Initially I begin the process of the work with a material, a feeling, a color, or a vague image. Obscure, intangible thoughts and sensations collect within my mind and my body and step-by-step the work evolves, develops while making. In my work I am going on a journey, seeking to surprise myself.
There are no words for what I am going to do. Things come together – one stone goes on top of the next – it feels like building.
My work incorporates fictional narratives, dream worlds with anchors in the real, occupy a space between familiarity and fantasy. These environments are systems – overlapping worlds, groups and subgroups that are juxtaposed and united through scale, color palette, form, space, and material. With the continuous pushing and pulling among the elements of this vocabulary, I am creating hierarchies of events and narratives, which compete and communicate. These multiform assemblages result in playful, mysterious landscapes enticing the viewer into visual narrative journeys often with a strong sense of foreboding. I develop pathways for the viewer to travel. I link micro with macro worlds, encourage a sense of irritation, and implied movement of objects, and ask the viewer to relate themselves to the forms and the situations that they present.
I am interested in creating environs in which the viewer experiences personal associations; allowing them to feel, to dream, to fantasize, to be irrational, subjective and intuitive. Specific or vague personal memories are awakened.

The viewer is asked to weave his or her own story and sensations, to believe and to wonder.

Above artist jhas been used as influnce for my exhibiton. Below photos are some i will be using

cellophane work and insperation

Below is the link for the website i have been using for my work.I feel this has helped me while experimenting as it is quite a solid guide line. The matireals and processses are easy to do put are challenging me as i am not do the exact same as what the guide says.I am using the cellopahne idea but i am printing directly onto it with paint (using cut out shapes) this will be then made into a shape or human figure (also adding the human scars ellement into it later)

says.http://www.pinkstripeysocks.com/2014/03/stained-glass-craft-with-aluminum-foil.html

Another idea i have thought about is maybe sticking with shapes but going with a stain glass window effect that would maybe have church or old church look. This is something i will be possibelly developing over time. This would also include thick black lines and have a border below are some possible idea:

futher research into this idea brought up this simple but effective idea:

This guide is actually to make a cellophane house but i will only be making a flat version (and obvioulsy not a house) I will be experimenting with this idea.
i will also be looking for plastic see through sheets(like seen above).

Above are the ideas i was on about before(^)

pop up and pull out book ideas

below are some ideas that have been sourced that relate to what i am attempting to do for my FMP exhibiton. The pull out book effect is one i want to attempt to mimic: Most pull out books i found are children (which is not particularly desirable but is still something i can work with) Other ideas that came up were more craft books that could be made at home or made as wedding cards(these were the things i tried to avoid):
g
This is one of the main ideas i will be using

net?Template layout for new idea

Below is the first attempt at a layout for a pull out picture (image) i had messed around with measurements before hand and came to the conclusion that this one was my favourite. the rEASON BEHIND A PULL OUT EXHIBIT was that i felt it would add to my theme(amp title) scars as, when some one pulled the tab down it would remove the scar and the person would be left with blank plain skin(meaning that without the scar see are born with we would have a part of us taken away. I really like this idea and plan to make it not to obvious or make it to child like
On the left there is the pull out sleeve(which will have the scars or what ever i choose to include)
On the right is the sleeve which will have the main body

image wise9or more content wise i have began to try draw out ideas and concepts of how i can do this project. So far i have drew up these ideas:

Above is where i started to add more detail to the images though I'm not sure how i feel about adding more3 as it starts to become overcrowded to me

looking more into Matisse

for my project idea i decided to scrap(or more or less put it to the side) the wire idea i had come up with before and look more at a artist whom I had researched before namely
Henri Matisse, I wanted to look at going down to the paper cut out route

Developing project proposal further

Overview so far
Taking my last idea further i have decided to not so much ditch but to take my work away from the wires idea as i felt like it would have been a dead end for myself. My enjoyment for it creased as soon as i started. The lack of materials that could be used was cut short by the colleges ability to pay money for a course they had made.A course they have made obvious they no longer care for. Explaing my idea for wire simply, i was going to make human figures out of wire attempt to capture shapes like the curves of the hips and other parts of the body below are some of the sketches i made originally:

above was how the wire would be tied so that the structure would not fall to pieces as it was not originally one structure( i attached multiple wires together)

Friday 10 March 2017

Project proposal idea:
Name idea: Scars;Exploring scars on the human body

How did i think of this concept:
The idea for this brief came to me when i was sat in a cafe in nottingham, one that was usually littered with students. As i sat down so did a girl at the table in front of me.She pushed her long curley ginger hair(which automatically caught my attention due to my extensive exposure to the pre raphiltes and my unrest in Dantes work and lilith as a whole). Her open back top revealed quite a lot of red scratch marks, something i assumed auto magically to be the result of sexual contact as it is common for a partner to cling to another and dig their nails in.Through looking at the scars my mind processed the though of scars on the body. Thoses that are done by accident or those that have formed over a while(even thinking of those that are with us when we are born or those that our mother would get when giving birth to us namely a C section). This idea appealed to me as i have always been interested in the body as anyone who knows me would know but felt i should move away from ares we all have (E.G breasts and genataila) and maybe move onto something that is more unique to us as a human being. Not everyone would have the same scratch marks as the lady i saw and this is quite a interesting concept.once again bringing back the idea that we are all individuals and our body's are all so different.
I also drew on my own person expiernces, being that, when i was younger i had a condition known as commonly as 'Slapped skin syndrome' something i got from birth. This would make my skin peel and i would sheed (very much like a snake would) but the difference was that it would be extremely painful but after a year of being in hospital i finally recovered from this though this left a mental scar on my parents as for a year of my life i was confined to my hospital bed and could not be picked up,on the rare occasions i had to bathe i would scream as the hot water was to much for what skin i had.Even so This still effects me to this day specially on my arms and leg, sometimes my neck making my skin come off on shreads. Also this has damaged my skin to the extent when any type of liquid i make contact with is uncomtable. Below are some image son my arm though they don't really show the redness and the hair follicles that are not a odd colour:

I feel that i can take this concept in multiple directions maybe going back to my original idea of missing fine art.Maybe making a picture of a human that when rubbed could come to pieces. This then could be rubbed and rubbed(also making it a interactive piece).I will be looking for artists whom have done similar though when i put in scars self harm is always prevelent.I shall continue my research into this while finding possible body images that would be good to put my idea on to

What i hope to get out of this is a true idea and a grasps of scars.I want to be able to get across my idea that we all have the and they are a part of us.I want this message to be strong but put simpley through my image(and making it look like some type of help line image or a cry for help)Also though doing this i want to be to expand on feed back that has been given by my tutors and to get the confidence back that was lost from my failure Mock FMP.

What i plan to do to help me achieve this goal:Research into scars that we as humans get.I will be excluding self harm in this instance as ai want to concentrate on the types of scars that are not self generated.I will be looking at ones that can be formed from birth or appear on the body after a while.
i will be drawing on my own experience.BUT the key in all of this is to experiment and experiment and to not just to stick with one media and thats it.To not stick with pen because its my medium to go further
My negative points in my work as stated above my negative points is my desire to stay the same and to not change my work to not break what is not broken as strange as it sounds. I want this project to challenge me just as the Space one did but go further and really go the mile not just proceeding work i feel it is pretty
Another thing i want to learn from or by is to take note and try and develop my work from others constructive criticism but filter out the flat out mocking of my work.

Artists i have picked up so far;
Egon schiele
While trying to grasp a idea i had began to look at Egon schiele again,as before hand his work had slipped under my radar. I looked at his work mainly for the only shaped characters and humans he drew in his work.I wanted move over to the more only contruced side of human bodies so felt his work was best to look at.I also wanted to go with a medium i had never really looked at(and how to mix it) this would be Ink and water colour something i never thought to look at before now mainly because i was wrapped up in my own little commutable bubble).i want to use his work to make the craziest and also relatable image yet.
One piece in Egons work i have looked at so far:

Diana Crawford
I have been looking at Dianas work since i started the FMP.Her idea of pure chance with her work is something i liked from the minute i saw it.She has very little con roll over it so was never disappointed with the results. Her choice of medium was Alcohol ink different to what i use. This would come out stronger then the normal type i use.I have tried out some of Dianas work to a point but wasn't as successful the first time. i will most likely continue to experiment like before but put a big twist on it.
One piece of Dianas work i have looked at so far:
This piece has been discussed in past blogs.

What mediums i shall be using or experimenting with
So far i have prodementally been using ink but have been trying totally different method with it.Using string to get strong and also messy lines.Using ink to print with not concentrating on the line work but making bulky figures.
My future ideas of mediums would be paint and ink or paint and water colours (just like Egon )
and drawing from other artist whom uses pure chance and no persuasion in her work to make faces.

Influences outside of artist
Books and a lot of them! Something which i feel has been lacking in my work.Research that isn't from internet articles.Something i had noticed in my last FMP was the lack of physical research. This was most likely a strong reason why my work lacked.Books can be a good resource as man of the artists i look at are well known so usually have one or two books dedicated to them.
Social media as always but trying to stay away from that for now while i get my feet

Types include:

  • Atrophic: scars that are depressed, flat against the upper layer of skin, can sometimes be considered as Hyperpigmentated. Which is when certain areas of the skin develop darker pigments.

Hypertrophic scar: Caused by loss of tissue, These scars occur because of excessive tissue that develops over skin opening caused by infections or wounds.

Artists inspiration ideas for Fmp(ink)

Artists name; Diana Crawford
Artist uses a mixture of alcohol ink to create images such as faces. She says that sometimes the images can come out with quite comical faces and this is the fun.She has also looked at flowers but enjoys creating humans more.
Below are some of the images she has done using this style:
Her work is said to be inspired by life expiernces and the bold bright colours of all the images are suggestive to this. Also the fact that she lived/lives in las vegas can be contributed to this.
Paul&Babe by diana crawford,Gallery North Bemji,700x497
While i can not find any mention of why this images was created or the meaning behind it i felt it was very important to look at and to take influences from as it has one key element i want to draw from.Human models and messy styles.

essay 2

My mental move.

While in higher education I had the opportunity to look deeper into contextual taking a particular interest in groups such as the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood concentrating on Dante Gabriel Rossetti and on the other end of the spectrum the Feminist movement and the artist, mainly looking at the illustrators and painters, who reside in it namely Tara Booth.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti influence may not have been as literal as other artist I had looked at previously but the content in his work had the biggest impact when considering my own. One big thing was his observational drawings on the female body, the way he portrayed the women in his paintings and sketches, the way his paintings always gave off a air of Romanticism, something I always set out to try capture in my own illustrations and paintings. Romanticism has always captured my attention and always carried my work further. The illustrated women and flowery botanical gardens of the Pre-Raphlite era, which showed the delicate and beautiful side to both humans and nature, something which I adore in all of the brotherhoods movements work, especially Dante’s.
He portrays women in his work as delicate, plain, and pretty. Something I always try and give off in my own work. Though I feel, unlike some of Dante’s earlier work, I try to give women a more independent and a more modern feel, showing off the charm and the shape of the body in all forms, rather then the thin petite shapes of Dante’s life time.
Not only do I look at Rossetti’s work for actual model and postioning influence, for example I have taken inspiration from his piece titled ‘Lady Lilith’ but also for the contrast in his work. The bright colours with darker muted backgrounds have always been something I have looked to achieve the ability to give a painting a 3D effect.
While I will not be using Rossetti’s work as distinctively in the future I feel that every life model   and every painting I do will always be inspired by him as his work fills me with joy. In a way seeing his art work in places like the Tate Britain has given me ideas for future work if only for the sheer size and for what others get from them.

Tara’s illustration and painting work, unlike Dante’s, does not contain delicate figures or dainty women portrayed in quiet English countryside’s. On the contrary she portrays women in a realistic, some would call unflattering but this is subjective. Doing this while injecting everyday situational humour that could be considered relatable for all. This is something I hope to carry on into later projects as I love images that can get across their point in what could be seen as a light hearted manner. Further on I would like to possibly including a mixture of dark humour and un-discussed topics often seen as taboo by some outside the feminist movements. With Tara’s work as a reference I want to look deeper into colour and the colours she uses (namely bright powerful eye catching ones) But more importantly look at the one key element that sets her apart from Dante, and most illustrators, the figures which draws. The way they are so ‘messily drawn’ but at the same time so constructed and planned. The way her characters seem to look distorted and out of proportion but closer observation reveal the obvious human observation Tara has considered. I want to be able to draw a body or person freely with little thought and is able to make blatant body shapes and curves while using a minimal amount of hand movement. Thinking about what I am drawing can result in images being to force or to put it simply to not be the result I was looking for.
Another thing I hope to achieve by continuing to look into her work is to be able to get full reference of layout, this is something Tara’s work excels in specially in one of her recent pieces called ‘Peeing in a romper’ in which she shows her self in three different acts in such swift movements we get a idea of what the character is doing. In the future I want to be able to put that much fast paced action in.
