personal statment draft 2

Throughout my studies at school I soon realised how much I loved illustration and that I would love to peruse it as a career. These desires were then continued when I started a three-year course at North Nottinghamshire college where I studied Art and Design, continuing all the way to foundation level. While doing this course I took on many skills which included: Time management, note taking and working in a team environment to complete a set task or
assignment .I feel that all of these are essential in the Art industry. Examples of more important skills of the art industry include using materials such as: Chalk, ink, water colour , and computer programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. By learning all of these techniques this has helped to make me versatile in a range of different art mediums. Experimenting with these mediums over time helped me to redefine and adapt my illustrational style and how i could subsume my line work and composition to make a powerful piece. While studying at University my aim is to continue this using my Black and white Noire style.
During the three years of study I took part in high amounts of research into artists and illustrators such as Egon Schiele, John Waterhouse, and also Antonio Rosetti. All of which i took a great deal of inspiration from as I really admired the ethereal quality's of their work and how large , in scale, the paintings actually were. Along side looking into artists i also looked into subject matter that i could study and integrate into my work. This lead me to look into the human anatomy, both male and female respectably ,I looked deeper into how it was perceived and built up my own
feelings towards the subject matter. My love For anatomic illustrations is evident in my many art pieces taken which are all presented in either a natural line work or heavy and bold abstract style. These art pieces were influenced by the life drawing sessions I did over two years. In life drawing sessions we would use a range of different techniques and processes.
Over the past three-years I have worked at a local gallery working with both children and adults aged 5-80 years old. This work was carried out at my local art gallery in Worksop alongside a experienced artist who was local to the area. At the gallery I would help stock supplies, set up work shops in advance, and help students with any artistic problems they may have had.I clocked over two hundred hours of work experience while there and felt this was a massive part of my progress and a great chance to have a first hand look at one of the most important roles in the art industry. Along side this I also worked with fellow students on a commission which had come from the Worksop Bus station community build. For this commission we were instructed to make Window vinyl's that would help the building meet curtail health and safety standards. The designs used in this process had been developed over several months using a strict design brief and was later on lay red to the glass and polished. To add to this I was later on picked , out of 15 plus students, to make a art piece that would hang in the centre for the public too look at as they walked past.
Another thing to add was 2 years ago I worked on a commission given to me by a former Art therapist whom had whished to have a painting simalr to the works of the late Jackson Pollock ,After speaking to him about the colours ,and the size of the canvas he wanted the finish piece to be on, I began to make experimental pieces using drastic and bold colours to try and simulate the daring pieces Pollock had made before When I had completed the work a week later  the work was received and well reclaimed. Also with the experience and the clients thanks I was paid £50 upfront for the work. This was of course a massive bonus along side gaining valuable experience.
My hobbies outside of my work and college life include , of course , Sketching and doodling whether that be on the train or sitting around and people watching.I feel that some of my best sketch work has come from spare of the moment observations.By doing this it has helped my work greatly as the biggest part of my work is the people around me and how the interact on a day to day basis.Evidence of this can be found in one of many sketch books i filled out.visiting galleries, which is something i have done a great deal.Over the course of many years i have explored galleries like the Tate modern,Tate Britain ,Manchester gallery ,Liverpool Gallery of art and so on.

personal statement draft 1

Through out my studies at school I soon realised how much I loved art and illustration and how much I would like to peruse it as a career. This was then carried out when I did a three-year course at North Nottinghamshire College. Through out the course I have learnt many valuable skills including time management, note taking, which has helped many times when doing units, and also working as a team to complete a task. Other things I have learnt include using materials such as chalk, biro paint and making a images on programs including Photoshop and illustration. This helped to understand which ones I enjoyed using the most which in the end was black and white noire style illustrations using pen and paper. All these helped me to create pieces that I can be found in my art portfolio, which has been redefined over the last few months.
Experimenting with different mediums over time has helped me to redefine my style by helping me figure out line work composition and thickness. One thing I love is to see the intricate detail of a line drawing pulled together to make a beautiful and expanded piece. While being at university, I hope to continue to illustrate and achieve this.
Over the course I did high amounts of preparation and researched into many artist such as Egon Schiele and John William Waterhouse whom I took some of my subject matter from, I really like the ethereal quality of their work and how huge the paintings were in real life. one of the most inspirational and important artist is in fact Rosseti who has played the biggest part by far in my work and how i constructed it.My love of the female and male anatomy and shown in my many illustrations and how I love to show them in many different ways, abstract or not. I take many different poses and female anatomy references from magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse which have many images I have used for past Units. Both magazines have helped me when it came to needing reference images but more importantly when i needed contextiual reference of years before social expectance changed.

In the past I have volunteering for over 3 years at my local art gallery called ‘The Gallery’ located in Worksop. In this time I helped support the teacher and worked with both children and adults aged 5-80 years old. This was a incredible opportunity as it gave me the chance to experience the Art industry first hand. While in University I would like to continue this further as it would continue to families me with the Art and design industry and perhaps help me to acquire a stable job in the future and perhaps later in in life I would love to work in a gallery or in a art work place as it would be a great opportunity to meet other artist
Another part of past experience was in fact working on the Worksop bus station as commission work with other students in my year. This included making window vinyl’s that would help meet the health and safety standard, these had been designed over several months by us and then layered onto windows. Also on this project I was chosen out of 15 plus students to make a wall hanging piece that has since been put up on the wall for all to see as they walk in.

Another thing to add was 2 years ago I worked on a commission given to me to create a piece of art work for a art therapist. He had requested that I do a splatter painting using a red and yellow theme.at the end of this commission I received £50. This, much like the bus stop project, was a great opportunity to get a real grasp of the art industry.
My hobbies outside of my work and college life include , of course , Sketching and doodling whether that be on the train or sitting around and people watching.I feel that some of my best sketch work has come from spare of the moment observations.By doing this it has helped my work greatly as the biggest part of my work is the people around me and how the interact on a day to day basis.Evidence of this can be found in one of many sketch books i filled out.visiting galleries, which is something i have done a great deal.Over the course of many years i have explored galleries like the Tate modern,Tate Britain ,Manchester gallery ,Liverpool Gallery of art and so on.

idea and concepts

For our new topic we were given space as a concept which we rewound then incorporate into our miss world alternative theme. While working on this unit i want to look at drag and really want to push the boat out like those who have been in miss world. since this post i have had a general look into the works and who has been in it. this has given me a idea of how far you could go.To start with i thought up a few quick ideas of where i could take this concept and still include my style and illustration.Below are some of the things i noted down so i could maybe build on them later or consider:

  • Drawing stapled on jackets and pieces of clothing(having a solar system theme)
  • Drawings stitched onto clothes(maybe a white shirt or dress in some way)
  • Drawing's transferred onto a top from transfer paper.
i felt that it would be a good idea to actually look into the meaning(or meanings)of the word so it would give me a better idea of what to do, below is the meanings pasted:

  1. 1

New project start ( A brief look into Alternative mrs world)

A brief description
The event started in 1972,The motto was "Its not about beauty its about transfrormation" .In this event anything went. This show followed suit from the original miss world in that it featured Day wear, Swim wear, and evening wear and then included a personality interview(which was no scripted as desired by the founder of the show Andrew logan)
In the past people who attended the shows ranged from famous to being no bodies (who would soon receive praise and recognition for their work in later years.People who attended the shows were known for being called Freaks, show offs and drag queens.

Back history( a look into what went on around the days of Alternate miss world):
The actual miss world (which the show got part of its name and also part of it theme from) had been run by Eric Morley which had been held in London 197 and was later attacked by feminists with flour bombs.Problems were seen with the alternate version as some saw "men dressing up as women and having fun and being themselves" a problem. These drag artist were known for challenging the law of gay behaviour. All the while hippies were been beaten for similar reasons (dressing differently)

First show:
The first show which was titled Party took place in 1972 was inspired by Andrew logan(who founded Alternative miss world). He had the idea for a new type of show after he went to a dog show called crafts. He later on went to make said party and invited all his other well known friends (who had a similar status to him at the time. This was recorded by Jack Harzan who went on to use shots from the party in his film called A Splash which was about David hockneys life.
